Find out how to claim compensation from Qatar Airways for your Missed Connection

Missing a connecting flight is always an inconvenience for any traveler. But if you’ve flown with Qatar Airways from Europe, or if you’ve had a connecting flight at any airport in Europe, you may be protected by EU Regulation 261. It gives you the right to claim compensation of up to € 600 (QR 2470) for any missed flight that caused a delay in arriving at your final destination.

What if you miss your connecting flight because of Qatar Airways?

Here you need to see what type of ticket you have:

– 1 Ticket, 1 Airline

If the first flight is delayed and the connection is late, you’ll still fly – the only question is how soon. The airline will do their best to send you on the next flight;

– 1 Ticket, 2 Airlines

A ticket on the same form, but the airlines are different, which means that there is a cooperation agreement between them. In a situation where airline “A” delays the flight and you are late for the plane of airline “B”, the problem must be resolved by airline “A”;

– 2 Tickets, 1 or 2 Airlines

Buying tickets in two different forms – the risk of not flying increases, since you are not formally a transit passenger. This means that if you are late for a connection, your second flight will expire, even if you are traveling with the same airline. If the ticket was purchased round trip, the return ticket is also canceled, as in the case of a no-show for the flight – now show. But if you have a more expensive fare, this will allow you to keep the return ticket and return part of the amount for the unused ticket.

Example of a delayed or canceled flight (including a connection) giving entitlement to compensation

The air travel included several flights, for example the Helsinki-Cairo flight and the Helsinki-Paris connecting flight, and was issued with a single booking, in the event that the airline Qatar Airways canceled the first flight, and for for this reason you did not make the connecting flight, and the Qatari company did not offer or provide you with a free alternative flight, which, depending on the schedule, would arrive at the final destination of your flight less than two hours later . Or, if you have benefited from free alternative flights, where you should have arrived at your destination at least two hours later. The same rules apply if the connecting flight has been canceled.

What kind of compensation should Qatar Airways provide to its passengers?

The passenger compensation, paid by the air operators causing the inconvenience is a standardized monetary compensation intended to compensate for the non-material damages caused by the loss of time and the inconvenience caused to the air passenger.

The amount of compensation provided by Qatar Airways to its passengers who miss their connecting flight depends on the distance between the departure and arrival points of the flight indicated in the single booking:

– If the distance traveled does not exceed 1500 km, then the amount of compensation is 250 euros;

– If the distance traveled remains between 1,500 and 3,500 km, then the amount of compensation is generally 400 euros;

– If the distance traveled exceeds 3500 km, then the amount of compensation is 600 euros (except for air travel entirely within the EU).

In other words, if the distance of the flight is greater than 3500 km and if its origin and destination are in the EU, the passenger may in any case be entitled to a maximum of 400 euros in compensation. In rare cases, the air carrier has the right to reduce the amount of compensation provided by law by 50%.

In what cases can Qatar Airways legally refuse to pay compensation?

The Qatari airline has the right to refuse to pay compensation to the airline if a circumstance of force majeure within the meaning of the decree adversely affected the timely departure of the flight, i.e. a circumstance which was caused by an event which, by its nature or origin, is not characteristic of the airline’s usual activities and which is beyond its effective control, and which the airline could not have avoided either, even if everything was taken reasonable steps on its part. Qatar Airways must also be able to prove it. In practice, air carriers provide detailed evidence and explanations mainly only to government agencies, although the European Commission recommends that evidence be provided to air passengers as well.

The decree contains a visual and incomplete list of events that may lead to a case of force majeure. Such events, according to the decree, can be, for example, weather conditions unsuitable for safe flight, restriction of the manned flight control center, strikes, unforeseen omission related to flight safety, a threat for security, political instability. In the event of a strike, the passenger is not entitled to compensation from the airline if the strike was carried out, for example, by employees of the manned flight control center, and not by employees of the airline. A force majeure in the concept of a decree can also be a technical malfunction which was caused, for example, by a bird striking an aircraft engine or, in certain circumstances, a latent manufacturing defect in the aircraft, which, among other things, had an impact on flight safety.

In the event of a refusal to allow a passenger to board the aircraft against their will, the airline is not required to pay compensation if the reason for the refusal was, for example, a safety issue at the airport. airport.

    I was refused boarding on Qatar flight at Manchester airport on 13 /03/2023 due to my 5year e visa being stamped on my old passport which was renewed on March 2022 . Information on Google stated that both passports should be presented at check in .Also confirmed by Indian e visa@gov.in. Me and my husband both missed our flights due to fact the visa may not be honoured. We both stopped over 12 hours at the airport and we’re allowed the next flight to Doha – Mumbai at a total cost of £671.We already had paid £1150 for our flights .This has caused us a lot of stress over a minor issue over my e visa which was valid from Jan 2020 – jan 2025.Please advise on this matter .
