American Airlines permanently suspends its Philadelphia-Doha flight, Qatar Airways resumes it
American Airlines will not be returning to Doha. After months of uncertainty, the American carrier has confirmed that it is ending its service between Philadelphia and the Qatari capital.
The Philadelphia-Doha flight, operated by American Airlines since 2023, was suspended at the end of February of this year, just as the US-Israeli war against Iran was beginning. This escalation immediately destabilized regional airspace, prompting several international carriers to review their services to the Gulf and the wider Middle East.
Initially, American Airlines had left the door open to a resumption, with a return date mentioned as early as January 2027, to allow time for a more stable environment. But as summer approached, AA’s commercial management changed course.
Last June, the airline announced that it would not be reinstating the flight to Doha. The route has been removed from sales systems, which generally signals a permanent discontinuation rather than a simple technical pause. Nathaniel Pieper, American Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, indicated that the Boeing 787 operated on the route would be redeployed to a new long-haul route, the announcement of which was expected shortly thereafter.
Qatar Airways takes over
It is Qatar Airways that is filling the void left by American Airlines. The Qatari carrier resumed its daily Doha-Philadelphia service on August 1st, operated with an Airbus A350-900, featuring its Qsuite business class cabin and Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity on board. This route brings the number of North American destinations served by the Oneworld alliance member to 14.
For Philadelphia, this change of carrier ensures continuity: passengers retain direct access to Doha and, beyond, to the entire Qatar Airways network to South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
